According to Dr. Davis in his book Super Gut, Lactobacillus Reuteri is a Keystone microbe that has been eradicated by modern life. During an animal study at MIT, they observed the following in elderly animals given L. Reuteri compared to those who did not receive L. Reuteri:
- Thick fur, more rapid hair growth
- Thicker skin, with substantial increase in dermal collagen
• - Acceleration of skin healing
• - Lifelong slenderness
• - Reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol
• - Preservation of mating behavior in older mice
If your favorite pet is pregnant, they should not consume L. Reuteri Yogurt as it has been shown in animal studies to increase oxytocin levels. Females can be given oxytocin to provoke uterine contractions at term pregnancy, causing the baby to be delivered. Since there is limited research on this topic, we do not know if it is safe for pregnant female to consume high counts of L. Reuteri.
If your favorite pet is suffering from Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) we recommend eating 1/4 to 1/3 cup each of L. Reuteri, L. Gasseri, and Bacillus Subtilis daily for a minimum of 4 weeks. The combination of these three probiotic strains is very successful in eliminating unwanted bacteria that has worked its way into your pet’s small intestine where it does not belong.
