FCF News

We are in the time of year when we are nurturing millions and millions of babies, rye plants that is!  (No human babies from Alicia or Angela but I am sure we will have one or 2 of those by the next farm report!) We normally plant around November 1st but because of the warm weather this year it ended up being much later.  It takes about 45 days for the rye to be mature enough to graze but once it comes it is the best time of year for us. The peas are still doing fine and the cows are in excellent condition but they will be very happy when the rye comes in, it is just the best.

Help Wanted!  We are looking for a person who is internet savvy with some web development experience to work with us.  20-25 hours /week or more depending on skill level.  The person would be in charge of processing orders, answering phone calls and e-mails and updating inventory and other information on our website.  If interested please e-mail us and we can give you more details.

As most of you know we try to stay on the cutting edge of technology and we like staying up on modern times.  We try to be “green” in any way possible i.e. recycling our egg cartons and containers etc.  Well, our 13 year old is stepping back in time and going forward with “green” to a whole new level with a pair of Halflinger work horses. I grew up Amish Mennonite in Lancaster county PA and all our neighbors were Old Order Amish while my dad farmed with tractors.  NEVER in my wildest dreams did I think I would ever be farming with horses but my daughters have gone horse crazy and I am going along with it and we will see where it takes us. Using the peas to feed the cows in winter has effectively eliminated feeding hay so I do not need a tractor to move hay into and out of the hay barn anymore, so one thing remains and that is mowing grass. We will now be doing that with an old style sickle bar mower, Amish style. We will see how this all works out. Hey, my tractor cannot eat grass and mow! It takes diesel fuel so I guess this is going green? Cost of the horses and mower, about the same as the tractor with mower. Cost of fuel with horses, zero, as they can eat grass with the cows, we will see if other hidden cost arise but for now it seems good or better, at least as long as my girls are horse crazy. I am told this is a growing trend in the EU as well as the USA and other places.  Lily is also looking into planting a few acres of veggies, horsy style, who knew?

And now for a little humor….
Subject: Little Girl on a Plane.
An atheist was seated next to a little girl on an airplane and he turned
To her and said, "Do you want to talk? Flights go quicker if you strike
Up a conversation with your fellow passenger."

The little girl, who had just started to read her book, replied to the total
... Stranger, "What would you want to talk about?"
"Oh, I don't know," said the atheist. "How about why there is no God,
Or no Heaven or Hell, or no life after death?" as he smiled smugly.
"Okay," she said. "Those could be interesting topics but let me ask
You a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same
Stuff - grass. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns
Out a flat patty, but a horse produces clumps. Why do you suppose that is?"
The atheist, visibly surprised by the little girl's intelligence,
Thinks about it and says, "Hmmm, I have no idea." To which
The little girl replies, "Do you really feel qualified to discuss
God, Heaven and Hell, or life after death, when you don't know shit?"
And then she went back to reading her book.

Pork highlights...

As you know Brian & Angela will be relocating to NC to start their own farm in April so they are phasing out and not purchasing any new piglets.  If you would like to get a half/whole pig from them, they have 4 available now through February and limited availability for the last batch in March so place your order now to secure one of their final pigs.  We have a new intern who is currently learning the pig business to take it over in a smaller capacity but there will be a delay from the time Brian & Angela leave to the time the new interns pigs are ready for slaughter so be sure to stock up now to get yourself through this period (about 3 months).

Thanks for being conscious consumers who vote with your pocket book by supporting our growing family of farms and budding entrepreneurs,

Trial Date: October 21st, Please Come And Show Your Support

Hello Small Farm Enthusiasts, Our trial date is set for October 21st at the Suwannee County Courthouse in Live Oak, FL. We would like to ask you to drop everything and come to the trial. The more people we can get into that room the better off we will be. If you want to say something on our behalf you may be allowed but if you want to observe, only, that works too. The judge will be persuaded by numbers of people interested in this case.

Rabbit, Chestnuts, Micro-Greens And A Trial 9/20/19

Hello Small Farm Enthusiasts, We may be going to trial. We are alleged criminals for selling food without a proper license. They sent an undercover investigator to our farm to buy our food and caught us red handed. We are charged with a second degree misdemeanor just like a druggy. Yes it is a very sick world we live in when the farmer and his wife who neither have ANY previous record are accused of a crime and the crime is something that people have been doing since the beginning of time.

Kefir, a Glass a Day Will Keep the Doctor Away and Persimmons A-plenty 9/6/19

Hello Small Farm Enthusiasts, Kefir made from raw, 100% grass fed milk is an amazing super food loaded with friendly bacteria for your gut. A healthy person will have 2 to 6 lbs of healthy bacteria in their gut. Another way to say this is that a healthy person will have 80% good bacteria and 20% bad in the gut but most Americans have this ratio reversed. This imbalance affects the immune function as these friendly bacteria are a huge part of your immune system.
